Milk

Back in August, Samuel accidentally got some milk, and since he thought it was soy milk, he was drinking it. We realized the mistake quickly and made the change fairly quickly, but we didn't actually see any reaction which was an exciting event. We waited a while, and started challenging him with cheese and chocolate. He would eat couple of bites of whatever we gave him, and we wouldn't see anything wrong. He would promise that he wasn't reacting and that it was really good, but he just wasn't hungry for more right then. We weren't sure what that meant; did he not want to admit he was reacting but he really was and therefore didn't want more? Was he totally fine but just didn't like it so he wasn't eating more? We kept trying to give him more and he would keep eating just a little at a time. We were getting really excited - is he past his allergy?!! But then one day, this happened:
A piece of Kraft cheese shouldn't do that; he's still allergic to milk. :0( We were really sad and decided not to challenge him anymore for a while. A couple of weeks ago, however, he went to his 6 month allergy check up, and we were given heartening news. They drew some blood, and when the doctor sent us the results, she was very heartened. He's still allergic to dogs and cats (according to the blood, we've never noticed any problems when he's been around them), and he's still very allergic to raw egg (but at least that's very easy to avoid), but the doctor wants to start challenging him with milk products!!! She wants to start with breads with milk in them, etc., and advised us to wait until they can do a controlled trial in the clinic. Since we couldn't get that appointment until April, however, we've gone ahead and given him a couple of things with a small amount of cooked milk, and so far so good!!!! THERE IS HOPE!! :-D Maybe someday we'll be able to take our little boy to France afterall...
I was very proud of Samuel, too, because he was very brave when they drew blood. He was pretty scared at first, but the nurse promised him that the "magic cream" would help a lot and that everything would be okay. He didn't even flinch when they took the blood, and was very excited to show off his bandage afterward. :0)

I'm especially enjoying re-reading this post, knowing that he's getting so much better with his allergies. Feed that kid another slice of pizza!
